A New Shopping Cart

This has been an interesting month to say the least.

This month I was hired to build up a new website for a local Italian restaurant with an online order area. As I normally do, is to build an order area and link it up to our Advanced Cart (PHP) software. But as I was contemplating this, something hit me! If they are ordering food, will it be really annoying to have the cart popup for every add to cart click. The answer, yes! it would. If I were ordering Pizza, or other food dishes I would want the process to go smooth and everything happening on one page with no page refresh or popups. So my solution was to build a brand new shopping cart from scratch using nothing other than JavaScript. Yes of course the processing part uses PHP to link to the merchant processor, but the over all functionality that will be on the order page would be designed in JavaScript and the data is stored in cookies.

Now for the hard part! As with PHP we can store all items in sessions on the server to track how many items are in the cart. Since cookies allows only one value in the text file I needed a way to track each cookie item/name for the cart. So in order to accomplish this I had to create a separate cookie just to store each product id name and separated them with a single "|" to split up later into an array. This way when I call this cookie, my code can then break down the list and call the correct cookie names created and load the data into the cart, or update it. This worked perfectly as expected. The result is a brand new cart fast and small.

So we will be making a commercial version of this cart very soon for everyone to download and include in their websites. We will offer a demo version and the full version will require a serial number just like our Advanced Cart (PHP) software. But this version will be fast and store the orders on the users machine using simple cookies. So incase they shut down their web browsers, they can come back later and the items are still in their cart.

The functionality of this cart will be very intuitive and simple to use...

Example:

<a href="javascript:additem_cart('ProductID', 'Item Title Here', '10.00', '1')">Item Title (Add To Cart)</a>

We will also include form examples for many drop down selections and so on...
